Coinbase Extension

A crisp, practical guide to the Coinbase Wallet browser extension — install, secure, and start using Web3 from Chrome and Chromium-based browsers.

Introduction

The Coinbase Extension (commonly referred to as the Coinbase Wallet Extension) brings wallet functionality to your browser toolbar. Instead of switching apps, you can safely connect to decentralized applications (dApps), sign transactions, manage tokens and NFTs, and experience Web3 directly inside Chrome or compatible browsers.

What is the Coinbase Extension?

It’s a self-custodial browser wallet client — a lightweight extension that stores encrypted keys locally on your device and mediates secure interactions between websites and blockchains. Unlike custodial exchange accounts, the extension gives you direct ownership and control of private keys and assets.

Getting started — Step by step

  1. Find the official extension: Go to the Chrome Web Store or the Coinbase Wallet page for the official install link.
  2. Add to Chrome: Click “Add to Chrome” and approve the permissions.
  3. Create or import: Open the extension, choose "Create a wallet" or "Import wallet", and follow prompts. Save your recovery phrase offline and never share it.
  4. Set a password: Use a strong local password to protect the extension UI.
  5. Optional — hardware wallet: For larger balances, connect a Ledger or compatible device to sign transactions.
  6. Connect to dApps: Click a site's "Connect" button, pick Coinbase Wallet, and confirm the request within the extension.

Core features

  • Self-custody: Keys are encrypted and stored locally — you control backups.
  • Multi-chain support: Works with Ethereum and many EVM-compatible networks (Base, Polygon, etc.).
  • dApp integration: Seamless connection to DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, and Web3 games.
  • In-extension swaps: Quick token swaps without leaving the browser.
  • NFT viewer & manager: Browse and interact with collectibles owned by your wallet.
  • Hardware compatibility: Pair Ledger (or supported devices) for extra security.

Trust & Security

Coinbase Wallet is developed with security in mind: encrypted local storage, permission prompts for every dApp, and optional hardware wallet support. However, "self-custody" means ultimate responsibility is yours — if you lose your recovery phrase, neither Coinbase nor anyone else can restore your wallet.
